Building Description

bldg_desc1The Lafayette Veterans Memorial Center is a modern facility, opened in 2005, with spacious meeting rooms and state of the art amenities. It is located at the west end of the City of Lafayette California, with the downtown area only one-half mile to the east.  The Veterans Memorial Building is constructed on a 1.28-acre site located at the northeast corner of Mt. Diablo Boulevard and Risa Road. The site is a rectangular east-west parcel having its primary frontage on Mt. Diablo Boulevard with the Building located on the west end of the parcel adjacent to Risa Road. The remaining eastern site provides parking for 56 cars including five disabled spaces.  There is a circular vehicle turnaround at the front of the building for unloading and loading of passengers and supplies.  There is a utility loading area at the rear of the building on Risa Road. Additional parking is available on Mt. Diablo Boulevard and on Risa Road.

Designed by Field-Paoli of San Francisco, ground breaking took place on April 22, 2004 with construction completed late 2005.  Construction was by veteran owned McCrary Construction Company, also of San Francisco. The 9,500 square foot building takes the form of a lodge with a dramatic granite and glass exterior and cathedral-like interior featuring grand, airy spaces with high beamed ceilings, ample maple wood trim, clear-story glass, and stained concrete decks to complete the rustic styling which earned a 2007 Honor Award from the International Interior Design Association.

The large covered main entry is at the east end of the building with direct access from the parking lot. There is a ramp for easy wheelchair access to the building.  The ramp leads past a large open front plaza featuring the “Honor Wall of Patriots.” This wall contains 360 bricks honoring local patriots and is flanked by two flagpoles flying the National, POW-MIA, and the State colors. Extending from this front plaza is a large open patio on the north side of the building which provides access directly into the event halls.

The main building entry leads into a large central gallery running the length of the building. This gallery is bordered on the south by a glass wall overlooking Mt. Diablo Boulevard and to the north by the main event hall. The size of the main hall is approximately 3,580 useable square feet and can be split into two event halls (east and west) by an accordion sound wall. There are sound systems and phone lines, power outlets, internet connectivity, and each hall has its own projection screen. The hall capacities are:

The Liberty Room (below photo) is located at southwest corner of the building.  The room is a fully equipped lounge with bar, cocktail tables and fireplace. The room can also serve as a meeting facility for groups of about 30 or as a private area for dressing or staging.
