VFW Post 8063 is an IRC 501(c)(19) Organization

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a military Veterans Service Organization whose membership requires the military veterans serve our country at time of war and serve within the area of conflict.  The qualifying military service may also be in other speciality military service.  The VFW membership is not limited to a branch of service, nor a military rank, nor a Military Occupational Specialty.  VFW Post 8063 members are from all the branches of service, all ranks and all MOS.  It is your military service and the risks you faced that make you eligible for membership.  Details on membership requirements are at: www.VFW.org.

Intent:

The VFW exists to serve all veterans, not just our members, and to serve the communities in which we live.

History:

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8063 was formed as a Lafayette Post in 1980-81 by a group of Vietnam veterans and veterans from World War II and the Korean War. These veterans thought a post located in Lafayette was needed. The National VFW recognized our post and issued a Charter in 1981. VFW Post 8063 joined the American Legion Post 517 (Lafayette) in using the then-existing Veterans Building located at the corner of Mt. Diablo Boulevard and First Street in the city of Lafayette. The city of Lafayette, California 94549 is about 25 miles east of San Francisco.

After a few years of operation, the membership recognized that many veterans were living in the adjacent cities to Lafayette.  So the Post requested the name of the post be re-chartered to the more inclusive name of Lamorinda to recognize the three main cities where our members live: Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda.  The National VFW issued a new charter with the new name and the same post number. Through the years and the efforts of many commanders and members, our membership grew to about one hundred and twenty five with members living as far away as New York, Hong Kong, Montana and Virginia. In the late nineteen nineties the post from the city of Walnut Creek was wrapped into Post 8063 increasing our membership and the area that we represent.  Membership continues to grow with new members moving into the area and others returning from their service to our country. Unfortunately, like other veterans organizations with members aging, we are losing many members as the years go by.

Through the years Post 8063 has done many things to be of service.  We helped local veterans by giving them the support they greatly needed.  Both our local VA Veterans Clinic in Martinez and the one in Palo Alto received aid and equipment requested.  Our Post has built decks at local schools so kindergarteners could do their art projects protected from mud, and built gazebos to allow seniors and others a dry place to wait for public transportation rides.  We are proud of our Color Guard service at the annual city of Orinda Independence Day parade. Equally important, our communities have provided superb support at our Buddy Poppy program.  Post 8063 provides Eagle Scout projects to our local Boy Scout programs. We also serve as the chartering organization for the local Boy Scouting programs.

Our post will continue to strive in meeting the social and special needs of our members and help all veterans and our community.

We look forward to visits from new and members from other VFW Posts.
